POST-TENSIONED BRIDGE WINS CONCRETE AWARD

THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE NEW BEAR RIVER BRIDGE, NOVA SCOTIA, IS DESCRIBED. THE TWO-LANE SEGMENTAL CANTILEVER BRIDGE IS A POST-TENSIONED CONCRETE STRUCTURE, REPLACING A SINGLE-LANE STEEL BRIDGE. THE REASONS FOR CHOSING CONCRETE IN PREFERENCE TO STEEL ARE OUTLINED. MOST UNITS WERE CAST NEAR THE SITE, EACH SEGMENT BEING CHECKED AND ANY DISCREPANCY COMPENSATED FOR IN THE NEXT UNIT. TO ENSURE A PERFECT FIT EACH SEGMENT WAS CAST DIRECTLY AGAINST THE ADJACENT SEGMENT. THE SUPERSTRUCTURE RESTS ON 7 CONCRETE PIERS, EACH CARRYING A "HAMMERHEAD" SEGMENT. PRECAST UNITS WERE CANTILEVERED IN PAIRS, ONE EACH SIDE OF THE HAMMERHEAD, IN BALANCED CONSTRUCTION. EACH SPAN WAS CLOSED AT THE MIDPOINT BY AN IN-SITU KEY CAST AT NIGHT TO REDUCE THE EFFECTS OF TEMPERATURE CHANGES. THE SPANS ARE CARRIED ON TEFLON BEARINGS ON THE PIERS. ALL ALLOW ROTATION AND ONLY ONE IS FIXED AGAINST SLIDING. THE BRIDGE IS CURVED FOR MOST OF ITS LENGTH AND PROBLEMS OF DESIGN OF FORMWORK, DUE TO THE COMPLEX COMBINATION OF HORIZONTAL AND VERTICAL CURVES, WERE SOLVED USING JACKS AT SUPPORT POINTS TO WARP THE TWO SEGMENTS BY AN AMOUNT CALCULATED BY COMPUTER. THE BRIDGE WON A NORTH AMERICAN PRESTRESSED CONCRETE INSTITUTE AWARD.
