STUDY OF THE PROPERTIES OF COMMERCIAL ROAD CONSTRUCTION BITUMEN

A series of tests was carried out to determine whether tests specified in German DIN standards for evaluating the quality of bitumen are adequate, or whether additional procedures for testing temperature sensitivity, brittleness at low temperatures, and adhesion strength are required. Thirty-three bitumen samples from various refineries were tested. The DIN test methods were supplemented by determination of penetration at 2 degrees C and testing of adhesion. The behavior of the samples when exposed to short term thermal ageing and under normal weather conditions for 12 months was also established. Results of the investigations showed that commercial bitumens often vary greatly with respect to their behavior at low temperatures and their adhesion and ageing properties. It is therefore recommended that the DIN specifications be supplemented by tests of penetration, low-temperature ductility, adhesion and natural ageing. /TRRL/
