TRENDS IN TESTING TECHNOLOGY FOR BITUMINOUS ROADS

The authors state that all test procedures developed should be methods which enable the deformation resistance, skidding resistance and wear resistance of bituminous surfacings to be predicted. Testing of the deformation resistance of asphaltic concrete is usually carried out by means of the Marshall method, but this is considered somewhat unreliable and no physical material constants can be derived from it. The same applies to the Marshall testing of stiffness. It is pointed out that although there are numerous methods of testing skidding resistance, all of them are limited to measurements on finished surfacings, making forecasts impossible. Details are given of equipment being developed by TEERBAU GMBH for testing the wear caused by studded tires on gussasphalt and fine asphaltic concrete surfacings. /TRRL/
