INVESTIGATION OF THE MATERIAL PROPERTIES AND THE DEFORMATION BEHAVIOUR OF BITUMINOUS SURFACING FOR ORTHOTROPIC BRIDGE DECKS UNDER LOADING

Since the time when orthotropic decks were first used in steel bridge construction, investigations have been carried out with a view to finding the optimum deck surfacing. The use of the orthotropic slab fluctuates depending on the quality and durability of a surfacing. Damage to the structures led the Federal Minister of Transport to examine the conditions of stress on the deck surfacing which was bonded to the steel plate. The first part of the publication indicates the state of present knowledge. In part two, by means of theoretical considerations, an attempt is made to characterize the behavior of bituminous materials by means of standards and rheological methods of observation, and to determine the basis for describing the material coefficients. Part three discusses the test rigs, explains the structure of the various loading systems to be used in the tests, describes the course of the tests to determine the dynamic material coefficients, and stresses the influences and consequences which result from the varying temperature-conditioned deformation of bituminous materials and steel. In the fourth part the results of the measurements are evaluated. It is shown that the complex modulus of elasticity of bituminous bridge surfacings in the temperature and loading frequency area investigated depends to a great extent on temperature; the dependence on frequency is on the other hand far less marked. The deformation behavior of the surfacings is illustrated mathematically and by means of rheological models. In the fifth part the effect of the results of the tests on practical construction is discussed, and an indication given of the cooperation between surfacing and steel plate. /TRRL/
