EFFECT OF CARBON ON THE MECHANICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF STAINLESS STEEL CONTAINING 12% CHROMIUM

EFECTO DEL CARBONO EN LAS CARACTERISTICAS MECANICAS DE LOS ACEROS INOXIDABLES DE 12% CR.

CURVES ARE PRESENTED WHICH SHOW THE HARDNESS, TENSILE STRENGTH AND RESILENCE PROPERTIES OF STEEL CONTAINING 12% CHROMIUM, 12% CHROMIUM-NICKEL-MOLYBDEMUM-TUNGSTEN- VANADIUM, AND 0,1 TO 0, 4% CARBON. THE CURVES ARE USED TO STUDY THE EFFECT OF CARBON ON THE MECHANICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF STEEL AT TEMPERING TEMPERATURES BETWEEN 200 AND 400 DEGREES C AND ABOVE 570 DEGREES C. RESULTS SHOW THAT FOR LOW TEMPERATURES, THE STRENGTH OF THE STEEL CAN BE RAISED BY INCREASING THE CARBON CONTENT, THE ONLY DISADVANTAGES BEING LOSS OF DUCTILITY AND TENACITY: FOR HIGH TEMPERING TEMPERATURES, AND INCREASE IN CARBON IN EXCESS OF 0, 2% HAS LITTLE EFFECT ON STRENGTH. /TRRL/
