CYCLOIDAL PROPULSION AND CONTROL FOR SHIP HANDLING TUGS

A brief description of the history, concept of operation and application of cycloidal propellers in ship handling tugs is given. The U.S. Navy's YTM 760 class tugs, which are fitted with two Voith Schneider controllable pitch cycloidal propellers, are described. Experience at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard since 1966 is summarized, with data on operating usage, reliability and maintenance. A series of operations is described, covering the handling of barges, surface ships and submarines.
