INVESTIGATIONS INTO THE USE OF THE RUMANIAN PLASTICIZER "DISAN" FOR THE MANUFACTURE OF CONCRETE

The plasticizer Disan, manufactured in Rumania on an industrial scale since 1967, combines the properties of a plastidizer and an air-entraining agent. A series of investigations was conducted to compare its effect on concrete with that of a plasticizier which is imported from the USSR and has been widely used for years on construction sites. The types of concrete tested represented the standard types used for the construction of hydraulic structures. Three types of aggregates and two types of cement were used. A study was made of the influence of Disan on the hydration heat and susceptibility to cracking of cement. Results show that concrete with Disan has a greater sensitivity to variations in mix-design, particularly variations in the water content and sand fines than other concretes. Disan reduces hydration heat, causes rapid setting without impairing the workability. No problems occurred regarding thermal cracking or contraction. Attention is drawn to the need for taking account of mixing and transport conditions which influence the percentage of entrained air in concrete after application. /IRRD/
