SOME FACTORS WHICH INFLUENCE THE LABORATORY DETERMINATION OF BITUMEN CONTENT

The use of the reflex extractor, the sieving extractor and the specific gravity method for the determination of bitumen content of asphalt mixes was investigated using two aggregates of different porosities. It was found that the reflux extractor failed to remove all of the bitumen from the more porous aggregate and results thus tended to be low. The use of two solvents and two evaporation methods with the sieving extractor was investigated. Trichloroethylene and infra-red evaporation method were found most satisfactory. The effects of porosity of the aggregate on the effective specific gravity and the resulting determination of bitumen content by the specific gravity and the resulting determination of bitumen content by the specific gravity method were also considered. /TRRL/
