STUDIES ON PROTECTIVE COATINGS FOR CONCRETE

Concrete is permeable to water and solutions of chlorides sulphates. Penetration of water and chemicals can produce a gradual change in the conditions within the concrete, ultimately leading to the corrosion of steel and the deterioration of concrete. One method of protecting concrete structures against the aggressive action of the environment is to provide a coating through which water and salts cannot diffuse, and which remains unaffected by the weathering action of the external environment. A wetting and drying method of testing the effectiveness of such coatings has been evolved and a number of coatings screened by this method. The results obtained are given in this paper. /TRRL/
