THE NEW BS 594-AN APPRECIATION

THE REVISED VERSION OF BS 594 ENTITLED "SPECIFICATION FOR ROLLED ASPHALT (HOT PROCESS) FOR ROADS AND OTHER PAVED AREAS" IS DISCUSSED AND COMPARED WITH THE PREVIOUS VERSION. THE CHANGES THAT HAVE BEEN MADE AND THE REASONS INTRODUCING THEM ARE OUTLINED. PITCH BITUMEN REPLACES FLUXED LUKE ASPHALT AS A PERMITTED BINDER. THE SYSTEM OF SCHEDULES FOR WEARING COURSES HAS BEEN RETAINED EXCEPT FOR THE RICH SCHEDULE 3 MIXTURE. THE NUMBER OF RECOMMENDED STONE CONTENTS HAS BEEN REDUCED. TOLERANCE LIMITS, WHICH HAVE BEEN WIDENED SLIGHTLY, ARE OMITTED FROM THE COMPOSITION TABLES BUT APPENDIX (A) PROVIDES THESE FOR ALL TYPES OF MIXTURES. LIMITS ON FILLER CONTENT ARE SPECIFIED FOR BASECOURSES. BS 594 HAS BEEN ALTERED TO COMPLY WITH THE DOE SPECIFICATION CLAUSE 911 FOR COATED CHIPPINGS. A TABULAR METHOD IS GIVEN WHICH SHOULD ENABLE THE TARGET RATE OF SPREAD OF THE ACTUAL CHIPPINGS TO BE ADJUSTED TO SUIT THE CHIPPINGS. RECOMMENDATIONS FOR MEASURING THE TEMPERATURE OF ROLLED ASPHALT ARE INCLUDED. A MECHANICAL DESIGN METHOD FOR WEARING COURSE MATERIALS CAN BE USED AS AN ALTERNATIVE TO THE RECIPE METHOD. THE NEW METHOD, WHICH IS BASED ON THE USE OF THE MARSHALL TEST TO DETERMINE THE OPTIMUM BINDER CONTENT FOR A SAND ASPHALT, IS UNPROVEN AND ITS VALUE IN-PRACTICE NEEDS TO BE ASSESSED. THE NEW BS 594 HAS TIDIED UP DISCREPANCIES, REDUCED THE NUMBER OF ALTERNATIVE MATERIALS AND DROPPED UNSUITABLE MATERIALS.
