THE AUTHOR DRAWS ATTENTION TO THE FACT THAT HIS AIM IS NOT TO COMPARE SEMI-RIGID STRUCTURES WITH RIGID AND FLEXIBLE STRUCTURES RESPECTIVELY BUT ONLY TO USE TEST RESULTS AND OBSERVATIONS TO SHOW SOME SPECIAL PHENOMENA LINKED WITH THE PRESENCE OF TRANSVERSE CRACKS. THE TWO MAIN FACTORS STUDIED WERE THE DEFORMABILITY UNDER 6.5T TWIN AXLE LOADS AND THERMAL PHENOMENA. A STUDY WAS CONDUCTED OF A TRANSVERSE CRACK, THE INCREASE IN DEFORMABILITY OF THE PAVEMENT AT THE LOCATION OF THE CRACK (BY MEANS OF DEFLECTION MEASUREMENTS) THE PLAY OF THE SLAB JOINTS AT THIS LOCATION, AND THE EFFECT OF THERMAL VARIATIONS ON CRACKING. /TRRL/
