CALCINATION OF BAUXITES FOR NON-SKID SURFACINGS

CALCINATION DES BAUXITES POUR REVENTEMENTS ANTIDERAPANTS.

AFTER RECALLING STUDIES OF NON-SKID SURFACINGS CONTAINING ARTIFICIAL AGEREGATES, IN PARTICULAR A GIVEN GRADE OF BAUXITE WITH A HIGH ALUMINE CONTENT AND CALCINED AT 1600 DEGREES C, THE AUTHOR GIVES BRIEF DETAILS OF THE CHEMICAL AND NUMERALOGICAL COMPOSITION OF BAUXITE AND OF THE THERMAL MODIFICATIONS OF ITS CONSTITUENTS. AN INVESTIGATION, CARRIED OUT ON SIX TYPES OF BAUXITE VARYING IN CHEMICAL COMPOSITION, SHOWED THE NUMERALOGIC TRANSPORMATIONS IN RELATION TO THE TEMPERATURE AND NATURE OF THE MATERIAL SUBJECTED TO CALCINATION. MECHANICAL TESTS ON TWO BAUXITES ENABLED THE COMBINED INFLUENCE OF TEMPERATURE AND CALCINATION TIME ON STRENGTH TO BE ASSESSED. RESULTS SHOWED THAT, IN THE NEAR FUTURE, IT WILL BE POSSIBLE TO PRODUCE A HIGH-QUALITY NON-SKID SURFACING MATERIAL WITH THE FOLLOWING CHARACTERISTICS: 1 LOS ANGELES, 12-WET DEVAL, 12- AND COEFFICIENT OF ACCELERATED POLISHING, 0,60. THE POROSITY, WHICH IS HIGH FOR SUCH STRENGTH, GIVES A VERY GOOD BOND WITH THE BINDS, AND EVEN AN INCREASE IN STRENGTH AFTER IMPREGNATION WITH THE BINDER.
