FULL SCALE STUDY OF THE FAILURE OF AN EMBANKMENT FOUNDED ON MUD

ETUDE EN VRAIE GRANDEUR DE LA RUPTURE D'UN REMBLAI SUR VASE

This article describes the full scale experiment, carried out in narbonne in January 1968, on the failure of an embankment built on a layer of mud. The layer of mud, approximately 14 m thick, was heterogeneous and comprised silt, more sandy layers, and organic layers with layers of peat in between: the whole system was of average consistency with a cohesion varying between 0,25 and 0,5 bar. The construction took five days up to the failure of the subbase. During construction nearly continuous measurements were taken of the settlement, pore pressure, total pressures and lateral deformations. The aim of the experiment was (1) to verify predicted stability calculations carried out by means of the conventional slip circle method using total stresses, and (2) to observe results obtained with the slip circle method using effective stresses. To interpret total stress calcualtions, the following had to be taken into account: an initial two-dimensional failure for which the safety factor was in effect very close to 1, and a three-dimensional generalized failure. Stresses on the failure surface were examined in detail to show that, in spite of the cracks observed, the shear strength of the embankment had to be taken into account. It is concluded that (1) the usual assumption for stability calculations (deep circular failure) was fairly well confirmed by observations, (2) calculations of stability under total stress conditions gave correct results, and (3) pore pressure increases markedly during failure in the vicinity of the slip surface.
