BLAST-FURNANCE SLAG AND ITS USE IN BITUMINOUS MIXTURES

LA ESCORIA DE ALTOS HORNOS Y APLICACION EN MEZCLAS ASFALTICAS.

THIS REPORT WAS PRESENTED TO THE 15TH ANNUAL MEETING ON BITUMEN HELD IN MAR DEL PLATA IN APRIL 1968. DETAILS ARE GIVEN OF LABORATORY TESTS FOR DETERMINING THE PROPERTIES OF CRUSHED AIR-COOLED BLAST-FURNACE SLAG. THESE PROPERTIES ARE COMPARED WITH THOSE OF GRANITIC CRUSHED AGGREGATES WITH A VIEW TO UTILIZING BLAST-FURNACE SLAG IN BITUMINOUS MIXTURES. MARSHALL AND TRIAXIAL TESTS WERE CONDUCTED ON HOT-COATED MATERIALS CONTAINING SLAG AND GRANITIC AGGREGATES OF SIMILAR GRADING, AND ON COLD-COATED MATERIALS: RESULTS SHOW THAT BLAST-FURNACE SLAG CAN BE USED IN BITUMINOUS MIXTURES, BUT NOT IN WEARING COURSES AND SURFACE DRESSINGS. BECAUSE OF THEIR HETEROGENEOUS NATURE, POROSITY AND HIGH BINDER-ABSORPTION CAPACITY, SUPPLY MUST BE STANDARDISED IN ORDER TO PREVENT CHANGES IN THE MIX DESIGN DURING THE EXECUTION OF THE WORKS. /TRRL/
