WEAR OF SURFACINGS BY STUDDED TYRES-PRESENTATION OF TESTS CARRIED OUT IN 1971 AND 1972

USURE DES REVETEMENTS PAR LES PNEUS A CRAMPONS - PRESENTATION DES EXPERIMENTATIONS 1971 ET 1972.

AFTER BRIEFLY OUTLINING THE HISTORY OF STUDDED TYRES IN EUROPE, THE AUTHOR RECALLS THE REGULATIONS GOVERNING THEIR USE AND MENTIONS THAT, SINCE 1968, THE "LABORATORIES DES PONTS ET CHAUSSEES" HAVE STUDIED THE PHENOMENON OF WEAR BY STUDDED TYRES. CONCLUSIONS REACHED AFTER OBSERVATIONS OF THE BEHAVIOUR OF PAVEMENTS ARE PRESENTED: (1) COMPACTION PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE (A GENERAL "LAW OF WEAR" IS DERIVED AS A FUNCTION OF COMPACTION): (2) 0/14 MIXTURES BEHAVE SATISFACTORILY: (3) THE BEHAVIOUR OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE IMPROVES WITH AN INCREASE IN FILLER CONTENT: (4) THE ROLE OF AGGREGATES REMAINS TO BE DEFINED. MENTION IS MADE OF THE POSSIBILITY OF DIMINISHING THE DESTRUCTIVE EFFECT OF STUDDED TYRES.
