SURVEY ON WEARING COURSES SUBJECTED TO WINTER STRESSES

ENQUETE SUR LES COUCHES DE ROULEMENT SOUMISES AUX SOLLICITATIONS HIVERNALES.

FIVE REGIONAL LABORATORIES CONDUCTED A SURVEY ON THE BEHAVIOUR OF ASPHALTIC CONCRETE WEARING COURSES UNDER TRAFFIC IN WINTER. RESULTS ARE PRESENTED AS REGARDS THEIR STRENGTH. EACH IS GIVEN AN ASSESSMENT MARK FOR THE BEHAVIOUR OF AGGREGATES, MORTAR, AND THE BITUMINOUS MIXTURE AS A WHOLE. A STUDY WAS MADE OF THE RELATIONS BETWEEN THE BEHAVIOURAL ASSESSMENT AND THE MINIMUM IN-SITU COMPACTION OF THE MIXTURE, NATURE AND QUANTITY OF SAND, BINDER AND FILLER CONTENT, GRADING (GAP-GRADED OR NOT) AND GRAVEL CONTENT. THIS STUDY LED TO THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A FORMULA FOR ASPHALTIC CONCRETE WITH A VERY HIGH RESISTANCE TO WINTER STRESSES. /TRRL/
