STRENGTH TESTS ON CONCRETE PIPES

PROVNING AV BETONGROERS HALLFASTHET

Current Swedish specifications for concrete pipes recommend that strength tests on concrete pipes be carried out by subjecting the pipe to two opposite linear loads equal in magnitude. However it was found that this test method caused complications at failure due to heavy shearing forces. This made it impossible to comply with the intended ultimate load. An alternative test method has been used at the Chalmers Institute for Materials Testing, Gothenburg, Sweden. In this method, the pipe is subjected to two groups of four linear loads. All loads are equal in magnitude and the respective loads in the two groups are diametrically opposed in direction. This method gives more uniform results and no complications arise from the shearing forces.
