ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT FOR 450-TON SHIPYARD GANTRY CRANE

A detailed description of the electrical equipment supplied by ASEA for a 450-ton gantry crane with a height of lift of 70 m (230 ft) and a span of 107 m (350 ft), with special emphasis on the converters, motors and control equipment for the hoist, long-travel and cross-travel motions, digital positioning and weighing. Severe demands are imposed on cranes of this type with respect to the control accuracy and protection against inadmissable stresses to ensure reliable operation with the large height of lift and span involved. These requirements have been met by modern static components, built up from exactly identical modular units, which have the advantage that an almost inertia-free control system is achieved. In addition, the equipment will be compact and light and the lack of moving parts minimizes maintenance. A further advantage is the low costs and limited space needed for spare parts compared to equipment employing m.g. sets.
