RESEARCH ON REPEATED LOADING OF BOUND MATERIALS AT THE ROAD RESEARCH LABORATORY

This article describes the methods and equipment used in an analysis of the theoretical stress-strain distributions in the type of heavy duty flexible pavement constructed in Great Britain. Results indicate a tendency to a nearly constant tensile strain history at the underside of the road base, and to a nearly constant tensile stress history at the underside of the basecourse. This suggests that road base materials should be tested under conditions of controlled deflection, and basecourse materials under conditions of controlled load. Further research, into the existence of a correlation between these two types of test, is aimed at developing a single test method which can be used for all bituminous bound materials.
