THE USE OF MULTI-STAGE TRIAXIAL TESTS TO FIND THE UNDRAINED STRENGTH PARAMETERS OF STONY BOULDER CLAY
A MULTI-STAGE TEST TECHNIQUE SUITABLE FOR UNDRAINED TRIAXIAL TESTING OF A SINGLE SOIL SPECIMEN IS DESCRIBED. THE TECHNIQUE IS APPLICABLE TO SOILS WHICH DO NOT REACH A PEAK VALUE OF COMPRESSIVE STRESS EVEN AT LARGE VALUES OF AXIAL STRAIN. THE TEST TECHNIQUE IS SHOWN TO BE VALID FOR UNDRAINED TRIAXIAL TESTS ON DIFFERENT SIZES OF SPECIMEN, TESTED WITH AND WITHOUT LUBRICATED END PLATENS, AND TESTED AT RATES OF STRAIN SLOWER THAN THE NORMAL RATE OF STRAIN USED IN UNDRAINED TESTS.
