A NEW SYSTEM OF CEMENT-STABILIZATION OF LOW COST ROADS

UN NUOVO SISTEMA PER LA STABILIZZAZIONE DELLE STRADE PODERALI MEDIANTE IL CEMENTO

The Italian Association for the Technology and Economics of Cements (AITEC) carried out tests in the spring of 1971 near Verona to demonstrate the use of cement-stabilization in low cost road construction; the tests covered a length of road of 1500 M, and were carried out by means of the mixed in place method without any admixture of sand or gravel to improve the soil. The earth roads which had to be improved were in a very bad state, and had been treated over the years in a non-uniform manner with various types of mine material. A description is given of the preparations for the work, the excution of it, including the use of agricultural machines and equipment, and the costs of the operation. The 15-20 cm thick cement-stabilized layer was provided immediately after compaction with a bituminous surface dressing (using 2.5 kg/sq m bitumen emulsion and 2-4 mm fine gravel). Details are given of the time taken to complete and the costs of the operation.
