SILICEOUS AGGREGATES IN CONCRETE

AGREGATELE SILICIOSE IN BETOANE

Some aspects of siliceous aggregate properties and their influence on concrete are studied as follows: (1) the fines of siliceous aggregates are chemically active in the presence of cement, (2) the activity of the fines depends on the nature of the cement and increases with the proportion of calcium oxide in cement, (3) aggregates containing a large proportion of fines cause a marked expansion of the concrete which cannot be reduced by compaction. This results in a decrease in density, mechanical strength, and resistance to corrosion and frost, and (4) aggregate fines have a stronger influence than cement type.
