This special bulletin contains papers presented at a meeting organized by the Cement Industry in Blois in March 1969. The papers covered the following topics: (1) Generalities on cement and hydration mechanism; the general characteristics of cement and its constituents are discussed together with the influence of the external environment, the role of hydration water, and the relation between cement characteristics and concrete characteristics. (2) The manufacture of cement; recent developments in the industrial processes in cement factories are considered: prehomogeneization, automation of ovens with on-line computers, automatic sampling, and use of automatic X flouresence. (3) Application of various methods of physico-chemical analysis to cements; the techniques (X rays, thermal analysis, optical and electron microscopy, infrared spectrometry) are outlined together with some applications to basic research or special cases. (4) Standardization and current regulations in France.
