MAN-MADE EARTHQUAKES TEST A DAM

In an effort to predict the effects of earthquakes on dams, a test was made in which forced vibrations were applied to a dam (30-year-old, 221-ft high fill). The data, which was collected on the dam's dynamic response to a sinusoidal shaking force applied on the crest, will be used as a basis against which theories attempting to predict the dynamic properties of the dam can be compared. If agreement is found between theory and experiment, the theory will be used to predict the response of earth dams during earthquakes. Tests for a concrete arch dam are being planned.
