SOIL STABILISATION WITH LIME

STABILISATION DE SOLS A LA CHAUX

The term "instant stabilisation" describes the process whereby compacted soil reaches adequate bearing capacity two hours after the addition of quick lime. With Belgian silt, a proportion of 1 to 3 per cent of quick lime is usually necessary to obtain a satisfactory result as long as two conditions are fulfilled: (1) The plasticity index of the natural soil must exceed 5, and (2) The natural in-situ moisture content must not exceed the plastic limit by more than 2 percent. Details are given of a laboratory procedure developed for determining the aptitude of the soil to this type of stabilisation.
