DETERMINATION OF SOIL STRENGTH BY MEANS OF SMALL SOUNDING EQUIPMENT

The well-known bearing capacity formulae of prandtl and fischer are compared with a method put forward by the author for the theoretical estimation of the relations between the penetration resistance of sounding equipment and conventional strength coefficients. The author's method presents a criterion for the onset of fracture under continuous loading of the elastic isotropic half-space. comparative tests are cited in which it was established that with non-cohesive soils relatively linear relations exist between the number of blows from a dynamic sounding rod and the penetration resistance of the proctor needle, and that the average test error with the dynamic sounding rod is smaller than with the proctor needls, so that in cohesionless soils the dynamic sounding rod should be preferred. On the other hand the use of the proctor needle is recommended in cohesive soils. Proposals for operations in cohesive and non-cohesive soils are illustrated in tabular form.
