COMPARISON OF "ALL SLAG" GRAVEL-SLAG WITH RIVER GRAVEL-SLAG

Test results show that the strength of crushed slag 0 to 63 days old is higher than that of river gravel-slag, even when the latter is completely crushed. Mixtures containing granulated slag have a low strength at an early age but reach maximum value in the long term. The addition of lime as a dope give satisfactory results. To strengthen carriageways which must have adequate strength within a short time, it is advised to use granulated slag with 2 to 3 per cent of fat lime. To construct new roads the strength of which must reach maximum value in time, it is recommended to use granulated slag of average reactivity with a normal proportion of fat lime (1 per cent). It is not recommended to prepare gravel-slag on construction sites when the temperature is below freezing although gravel-slag is not destroyed or altered by frost.
