GEOHYDROLOGIC INVESTIGATIONS DURING TUNNEL CONSTRUCTION

GEOHYDROLOGISKA UNDERSOEKNINGAR VID TUNNELBYGGNAD

THE NECESSARY INVESTIGATIONS OF THE SOILS AND GROUND WATER CONDITIONS TO AVOID SOIL SETTLEMENT BY TUNNEL CONSTRUCTION ARE DISCUSSED IN THIS ARTICLE. THE AUTHORS DESCRIBE A TUNNEL DRIVING PROJECT OUTSIDE GOTHENBURG, SWEDEN. GEOHYDROLOGICAL SURVEY MAPS WERE WORKED OUT BY MEANS OF FIELD INVESTIGATIONS SOUNDING, OLDER MAPS AND AIR PHOTOS FOR DETERMINING CRITICAL BOUNDARIES BETWEEN DIFFERENT TYPES OF SOILS ETC. THE GROUND WATER CONDITIONS WERE INVESTIGATED BY LONG TERM OBSERVATIONS IN WATER WELLS AND WATER-LEVEL PIPES. NATURAL GROUND WATER STREAMS BELOW THE CLAY LAYERS WERE IDENTIFIED. PORE PRESSURE MEASUREMENTS WERE PERFORMED AT CERTAIN POINTS. AN INVESTIGATION OF THE FOUNDATION OF THE BUILDINGS IN THE AREA WAS CARRIED OUT. LEVELLING AND PHOTOGRAPHIC DOCUMENTATION OF THE FOUNDATION WERE MADE. THE MOST CONVENIENT ALIGNMENT OF THE TUNNEL FROM THE TECHNICAL-ECONOMICAL ANGLE WAS DETERMINED, BASED ON THE INVESTIGATIONS MENTIONED. THE AUTHORS POINT OUT THAT IN CERTAIN CASES IT COULD BE NECESSARY TO INCREASE THE LENGTH OF THE TUNNEL IF THE RISK OF GROUND WATER LOWERING AND SOIL-DAMAGE IS DECREASED AND TUNNEL DRIVING IS FACILITATED.
