CONTROLLED GROUND WATER LOWERING FOR DETERMINATION OF THE PRECONSOLIDATION PRESSURE IN DEEP LAYERS OF CLAY

KONTROLLERAD GRUNDVATTENSANKNING FOER BESTAEMNING AV FOERKONSOLIDERINGSTRYCKET I DJUPA LERLAGER

A DISCUSSION OF THE PRE-CONSOLIDATION PRESSURE OF CLAY AND THE IMPORTANCE OF KNOWING ITS PROPER VALUE FOR CALCULATION OF SETTLEMENT AND FOR CHOICE OF FOUNDATION METHOD IS INCLUDED. THE PROPERTIES OF NORMALLY CONSOLIDATED AND OVERCONSOLIDATED CLAY AND THE FACTORS CAUSING OVERCONSOLIDATION ARE REVIEWED. AN INVESTIGATION OF THE PRE- CONSOLIDATION PRESSURE OF CLAY AT A BUILDING SITE IN ANGERED NORTHEAST OF GOTHENBURG, SWEDEN, IS DESCRIBED. TUNNEL CONSTRUCTION HAD CAUSED A GROUNDWATER LOWERING OF 20 TO 30 METERS. THE PRE-CONSOLIDATION PRESSURE COULD NOT BE DETERMINED BY ORDINARY LABORATORY METHODS BECAUSE OF DISTRUBANCE BY THE SAMPLING. THE LAYER OF CLAY WAS 26.5 METERS DEEP AND AN UNDERLYING SAND LAYER HAD A THICKNESS OF 0.5 METERS. THE GROUNDWATER LEVEL WAS LOWERED ABOUT 20 METERS BY PUMPING AND THE PORE WATER PRESSURE DECREASED RAPIDLY, INDICATING A LOAD WITHIN THE RANGE OF THE OVERCONSOLIDATION LOAD, CORRESPONDING TO AN OVERCONSOLIDATION OF 15 TO 20 MP/CM2. FROM THE MEASUREMENT OF SETTLEMENT AND THE PORE WATER PRESSURE DECREASE, THE MODULUS OF COMPRESSION OF THE CLAY COULD BE DETERMINED.
