LANDSLIDE. HOW IT COULD HAPPEN AND HOW TO PREVENT ANOTHER

THIS ARTICLE DESCRIBES A LANDSLIDE IN JORDBRO SOUTH OF STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN, IN OCT. 1972. THE SLIDE OCCURRED JUST OUTSIDE A BUILDING SITE AND HAD A LENGTH OF 500 METRES AND A WIDTH OF ABOUT 90 METRES. A DETAILED GEOTECHNICAL FIELD INVESTIGATION WAS PERFORMED AFTER THE SLIDE BY THE SWEDISH GEOTECHNICAL INSTITUTE. THE COMPLEXITY OF THE SOILS IN THE AREA, SILT WITH LAYERS OF CLAY, MAKES IT DIFFICULT TO DETERMINE THE DIRECT CAUSE OF THE LANDSLIDE. A HIGH GROUND WATER PRESSURE IN THE SILT COULD HAVE DECREASED THE TENSILE STRENGTH AS THE WATER UPLIFT PRESSURE REDUCED THE LOAD PRESSURE OF OVERLYING SOIL. A DISCUSSION OF THE CAUSES OF THE SLIDE IS INCLUDED TOGETHER WITH RESPONSIBILITY, MEASURES FOR PREVENTING A NEW SLIDE AND COSTS.
