FOR A PROGRAMME OF MEDICAL STUDIES OF ROAD SAFETY

PER UN PROGRAMMA DI STUDI MEDICI SULLA SICUREZZA STRADALE

THE AUTHOR POINTS OUT THE POOR PRACTICAL RESULTS ACHIEVED BY ISOLATED CAMPAIGNS AGAINST DRIVING WHILE UNDER THE INFLUENCE OF ALCOHOL OR DRUGS. IT IS SUGGESTED THAT BETTER RESULTS WOULD BE ACHIEVED BY EDUCATION AND INFORMATION WITHIN THE CONTEXT OF THE OVERALL HEALTH EDUCATION OF THE CITIZEN. THIS (IN AGREEMENT WITH COUNCIL OF EUROPE PROPOSALS) SHOULD BE PRACTISED IN SCHOOLS, FROM THE YOUNGEST AGE RIGHT THROUGH TO SCHOOL LEAVING AGE. POTENTIAL DRIVERS WOULD THUS BETTER APPRECIATE FUTURE EMPHASIS ON THE HARMFUL EFFECTS OF DRINK AND DRUGS, AND EXOGENOUS INTOXICATION. A CASE IS MADE FOR THE INVOLVEMENT OF TRADE UNIONS IN THE FORMULATION OF UP-TO- DATE LEGISLATION REGARDING WORKING HOURS AND REST PERIODS FOR PROFESSIONAL DRIVERS.
