COMPUTER PROGRAM FOR DESIGN OF CURVED BRIDGES

THIS ARTICLE DESCRIBES A COMPUTER PROGRAM FOR CALCULATION OF THE GEOMETRY OF BRIDGES. THE PROGRAM WAS DEVELOPED DURING 1971-72 BY ROAD AUTHORITIES IN DENMARK, FINLAND, NORWAY AND SWEDEN. THE SYSTEM AND PROGRAM WORK WAS PERFORMED BY THE SWEDISH COMPANY MARKDATA AB, STOCKHOLM. THE PROGRAM HAS BEEN PRACTISED SINCE THE SUMMER OF 1972. THE GEOMETRIC SHAPE OF THE BRIDGE IS DESCRIBED IN TERMS OF BRIDGELINES (I.E. EDGES OF CARRIAGEWAY, EDGE-BEAMS ETC.), PROJECTIONS OF THESE LINES IN THE HORIZONTAL AND THE VERTICAL PLANE AND ROTATION CURVES. THE CROSS SECTIONS AND POINTS OF INTERSECTIONS ARE DESCRIBED. IN THE THIRD STAGE FOUR KINDS OF RESULTS COULD BE ORDERED: 1. COORDINATES FOR ARBITRARY POINTS IN ARBITRARY CROSS SECTIONS; 2. LAY-OUT DATA FROM ARBITRARY LINES BETWEEN ARBITRARY POINTS; 3. LENGTHS OF CHORDS AND CURVES BETWEEN ARBITRARY POINTS; 4. A MAGNETIC TAPE FOR STORAGE OF POINTS AND LINES FOR FUTURE CONSTRUCTION OF PROFILES CROSS SECTIONS AND PERSPECTIVE DRAWINGS ETC.
