THE KIRUNA - RIKSGRAENSEN ROAD

VAEGEN KIRUNA - RIKSGRAENSEN OEPPNAR SVERIGES SKOENASTE FJAELLVAERLD

This is a description of the road building project from Kiruna in Northern Sweden to the Northern parts of Norway. In this article the Swedish part of the road, 140 km, is dealt with. The average annual daily traffic is calculated at 500-1000 vehicles for the year 1990. Based on this calculation the road width proposed is 6.5 metres. The building costs are estimated at 130 million sw. cr. and the annual maintenance costs at about 2 million sw. cr. A brief historical review is included in the article. The planning work is described. The aim of the preliminary plan is that the road alignment should follow the Kiruna - Riksgransen railway alignment. Certain factors have to be thoroughly considered as the road goes through high mountain country, partly encroaching on the Abisko National Park. In particular the problems concerning environmental effects of this road building project are discussed. One of the main problems is the effect of reindeer breeding. The special snow and wind conditions in this area and how they affect the road design are dealt with. /TRRL/
