A QUIET HEAVY LORRY

THIS PAPER DESCRIBES A PROJECT SPONSORED BY THE TRANSPORT AND ROAD RESEARCH LABORATORY TO DEVELOP DEMONSTRATION QUIET HEAVY VEHICLES. THE VEHICLES ARE DUE TO BE AVAILABLE AFTER ABOUT THREE YEARS, AND ARE INTENDED TO BE AT LEAST 10DB(A) QUIETER THAN CURRENT VEHICLES UNDER THE NORMAL TEST CONDITIONS AND UNDER NORMAL OPERATING CONDITIONS. THE ORGANIZATIONS TAKING PART IN THE PROJECT IN ADDITION TO THE TRANSPORT AND ROAD RESEARCH LABORATORY ARE THE INSTITUTE OF SOUND AND VIBRATION RESEARCH; THE MOTOR INDUSTRY RESEARCH ASSOCIATION; BRITISH LEYLAND; FODEN; AND ROLLS-ROYCE MOTORS. AN ESTIMATE IS INCLUDED OF THE EFFECTS ON THE OVERALL NOISE CLIMATE OF USE OF HEAVY VEHICLES QUIETENED TO THIS LEVEL. A STRONG CACE IS ESTABLISHED FOR NOT RESTING CONTENT WITH PRODUCING QUIETER LORRIES, BUT FOR PROCEEDING ALSO TO REDUCE THE NOISE LEVEL OF CARS.(A)
