GENERATION OF FREIGHT TRAFFIC BY SHOPPING CENTRES

THE MAIN OBJECTIVE OF THE SURVEY, SPONSORED BY THE GREATER LONDON COUNCIL, WAS TO INVESTIGATE THE GENERATION OF FREIGHT TRAFFIC BY SHOPPING CENTRES. LARGE SCALE SURVEYS WERE CONDUCTED IN TWO LARGE LONDON SHOPPING CENTRES BY MEANS OF INTERVIEWS AMONG SHOP MANAGERS AND DIRECT OBSERVATION OF COMMERCIAL VEHICLE TRAFFIC. THE NUMBER OF DELIVERIES TO A SAMPLE OF 252 SHOPS WAS MATCHED WITH THE TYPES AND DIMENSIONS OF THE SHOPS. A MODEL WAS DERIVED. WHICH HAS ALREADY BEEN USED TO FORECAST FREIGHT TRAFFIC IN A NEW COMMERCIAL CENTRE BEING PLANNED.
