SUPER PILES PROVE THEIR USE FOR BRIDGE ABUTMENT FOUNDATIONS

THE AUTHOR DESCRIBES THE SUCCESSFUL INSTALLATION OF SUPER PILES FOR THE ABUTMENTS OF THE CLARENCE ROAD BRIDGE AT CARDIFF. THE PILES HAVE DIAMETERS OF 1.83M AND A PENETRATION DEPTH OF 30M. A VERTICAL REACTION OF 2400 TONS IS IMPOSED BY THE BRIDGE ON THE EIGHT PILES FORMING AN ABUTMENT. THE PILING DESIGN ALLOWED FOR THE EXTREME CONDITION OF THE RIVER SCOURING THE EMBANKMENTS. TEST DATA INDICATE THAT THE SHAFT FRICTION IN KEUPER MARL IS 320 KN/M SQUARED AND THE END BEARING IS 5500 KN/M SQUARED. PILES WERE PLACED ON A STONE FILLED EMBANKMENT. THEY WERE AUGER-BORED OR GRABBED OUT UNDER BENTONITE AND CONCRETED USING THE TREMIE CONCRETING TECHNIQUE. PRE-FABRICATED STEEL REINFORCEMENT CAGES WERE LOWERED INTO POSITION. THE CALCULATED VOLUME OF 78.90 M CUBED OF A SUPER PILE DID NOT CORRESPOND TO THE 90 M CUBED OF HIGH SLUMP CONCRETE USED TO FILL A PILE. CONVENTIONAL LOAD-BEARING TESTS ARE IMPRACTICABLE FOR SUPER PILES. THE ADVANTAGES OF SUPER PILES ARE DISCUSSED, AND THEIR CONSTRUCTION IS EXPECTED TO PRODUCE FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS OF BENTONITE TECHNIQUES.
