PROTECTION AGAINST CORROSION--ADHESIVE-BONDED JOINT ON ORTHOTROPIC SLABS

The steel orthotropic slab of the North bridge in Mannheim- Ludwigshafen (the Kurt-Schumacher bridge) was provided with an adhesive-bonded joint as a protection against corrosion. During the incorporation of the approximately 3 cm thick gussasphalt protective layer with the finisher, small blisters, some individual and some in crops, occurred in the freshly laid and still hot gussasphalt; some of these blisters burst and left individual fine steam channels. In numerous tests and investigations both in the Laboratory and on the construction site the cause of this was determined; the cause lay in moisture residues on the surface of the adhesive-bonded joint. On the structure itself, in places where blisters and steam channels had occurred in the gussasphalt, the gussasphalt was carefully removed from the adhesive-bonded joint; the latter was examined for damage and its adhesion to the carriage slab by means of glued steel bolts was checked by means of tensile tests. It was estimated that it was undamaged, and thus the corrosion protection of the slab was guaranteed. The tensile tests bonded joint far exceeded the required value of 20 kp/cubic cm. Temperature measurements on the underside of the orthotrpoic slab showed that in the bonded joint there were maximum temperatures of about + 146 degrees C and under the deck panel of about +105 degrees C. The results of the measures are presented and briefly evaluated. In conclusion an examplanation is given of the effects of the blisters and the steam channels, and ways in which their also showed that on the average the adhesion strength of the re-occurrence can be avoided. /TRRL/
