M.A.N. PRESENTS FIRST 18,000 HP 52/55 AND 32,000 HP KSZ PRODUCTION ENGINES

A technical discussion of the two new production engines manufactured by M.A.N. of Augsburg, Germany is presented. The two engines, 18,000 HP and 32,000 HP, are discussed in general, and there is a more lengthy description of the 18,000 HP 52/55 engine. Various applications are given for these engines, aside from the marine industry, with related reports to be released soon. Engine pressures, dimensions, speeds, power/weight ratios and specific outputs are listed with additional supplementary information about the gear train. Improvements in design of various components of these engines compared to the earlier models of comparable size are mentioned. Among the advantages listed are: improved assembly techniques, cylinder lubrication, low speed lubrication and wear rates of parts. All basic operations are considered and critical comparisons to earlier models are discussed in some detail with many improvements mentioned. M.A.N. has taken meticulous care in design of the engine for fast maintenance procedures with considerable time devoted to the development of special maintenance tools. Testing procedures and results are given indicating the improved performance of these new engines.
