CONCRETE ALUMINUM INTERACTION

INTERACCION ALUMINIO CONCRETO

A case of deterioration of concrete in which aluminium conduits were embedded is presented. Some comments are made on the interaction between aluminium and concrete and on the conditions of equilibrium for the contact between the two materials. The case presented confirms other known cases due to the same causes. It was established that the combined action of the aluminium and iron in contact, the presence of chlorides in concrete and the high environmental humidity, resulted in a progressive galvanic oxidation of the aluminium, with the formation of a layer of material around the aluminium with a great capacity of expansion, which in turn caused cracking of the concrete elements.
