FIRST SPAR STORAGE-LOADING BUOY PROJECT POSED COMPLEX DESIGN, CONSTRUCTION PROBLEM

An offshore floating storage-loading facility, with a capacity of 300,000-bbl of oil, is described. This SPAR storage-loading unit consists of three cylindrical sections placed one on top of the other, with the storage facility housed in the lowest section, the pumping and other equipment on the middle section, and the power-generating equipment, control equipment, and crew quarters located in the top section. Design criteria which this buoy had to meet are given, and various aspects of the facility, such as anchoring system, tanker mooring system, submarine hoses, and antipollution features are all described in the article.
