A doppler sonar navigation system, for use by hopper dredges, is described. The unit described is a stand-alone navigation system in that it does not require any shore equipment to function properly. The operation of the system is explained, with the various system components described. Benefits arising from the use of this system by a self-propelled hopper dredge, among them improved dredger efficiency, and the capability to provide dead reckoning information, are also fully discussed. Other future benefits are briefly described.
