ELECTRIFICATION IN SPAIN

Recent electrification schemes of the Spanish National Railways have been at 3000 V dc. The latest plan covers the period 1974-1977. The plan, approved in 1974, supplements the 1972-1975 RENFE program. At the end of 1973 there was a total of 3400 route km electrified. Anticipating steady growth of freight and passenger traffic, RENFE plans now to convert an additional 3300 km by 1977. Since electric traction is cheaper than diesel, rail traffic in the period 1973-1980 will be less costly for RENFE, which, in turn, represents less cost to the nation.
