APPLICATION OF RELIABILITY TO THE DESIGN OF SHIPS' MACHINERY

The reliability approach to the design of ship's engineering systems is of recent origin and has been brought to the fore by economic pressures. This paper discusses two ways in which reliability can be used as an aid to a cost effective design and also discusses in more detail specific topics such as data collection, failure mode and effect analysis, criticality analysis, Markov analysis, simulation and sensitivity analysis. An appendix is included which shows the basic theory associated with the reliability predictions.
