A conceptual design of a lithium/sulfur battery having a specific energy of 150 W-hr/kg has been developed for marine application. The battery weighs 4000 kg and has a capacity of 5000 A-hr, with an average voltage of 120 V. The energy delivered is 600 kW-hr with a power output of 50 kW. The design parameters of the submarine battery are based upon the results of recent work at Argonne National Laboratory on the Development of full-scale, sealed Li-Al/FeS2 cells for application to off-peak energy storage on electric utility networks.
