TESTING SHIP MODELS ON LONGITUDINAL SHIP MOTIONS BY TRANSIENT RESPONSE METHOD. PART 4--HYDRODYNAMIC PRESSURE AND IMPACT PRESSURE

In previous papers, the author showed the transient response method was effective for research on longitudinal ship motions in waves, wave exciting forces and hydrodynamic derivatives. In this paper the transient response methods are applied to the hydrodynamic pressures in waves, diffraction pressures in waves and radiation pressures. The following conclusions can be deduced from these studies: (1) Testing a ship model in transient water waves is a useful method for study on ship hydrodynamic pressure in waves; (2) Transient forced oscillation is a useful technique for research on the radiation pressure; and (3) The good correlation between the calculated values by ordinary strip method and the experiment results is obtained with respect to the hydrodynamic pressures in waves and these components. Further, testing ship models in high transient water waves is adapted for investigation on impact pressures acting on a ship hull. Obtained results are as follows: (1) phenomenal violent cruising conditions can be easily actualized by testing in high transient water waves; (2) very violent impact pressures on the stem can be measured by the experiments in high transient water waves; and (3) measured highest impact pressure on stem reaches about 200 m water head. It is considered that these very high impacts are to be the phenomenon named "normal impact."
