PROBLEMS IN SEA-WATER CIRCULATING SYSTEMS

Recommendations are given on design and construction materials for reducing corrosion of heat exchangers, condensers, pumps, valves and pipework on large tankers. Some protective systems designed to combat corrosion have been evaluated and a unit has been designed to inject predetermined amounts of ferrous sulphate solution into sea-water cooling systems. This unit has been fitted on board several vessels where it has operated reliably and the injection of ferrous sulphate has combated impingement attack.
