FRACTURE MECHANICS APPROACH TO SERVICE LOAD FATIGUE IN WELDED STRUCTURES

Where fatigue cracks initiate early in service life, Miner's linear cumulative damage rule was shown to be a special case of the fracture mechanics fatigue crack propagation analysis of variable amplitude fatigue. Aside from one source of error in Miner's rule (stress interaction), most other sources of error can be controlled to provide a reliable estimate of fatigue life. It was shown that the simple form of a linear cumulative damage theory was esentially correct for a welded joint which was subjected to a stress sequence which would not have introduced any stress interaction effects. This condition was achieved by using an increasing stress sequence in which stresschanges never exceeded 56 N/mm. sq.
