LONGITUDINAL VIBRATION IN TAUT-LINE MOORINGS

The results of the studies presented here indicate that internal structural damping within the line may be relatively ineffective in the suppression of longitudinal-motion resonance of a taut-line mooring. External hydrodynamic skin-friction, on the other hand, is surprisingly effective. Neither mechanism is as yet thoroughly understood, and the authors believe that carefully planned experimental programs are in order, so that the effects of these dissipation mechanisms upon overall system behavior can be better predicted.
