The Eriksberg yard divides the ship into what are termed natural units, which gives the simplest possible assembly in the building dock without being exacting on the manufacture of the units. The only items that are connected to form one complete unit, consisting of two natural units assembled before erection on board, are the deck units, and the reason for this is that the yard will then be in a position to hang them without being forced to make elaborate arrangements for supporting the parts to be assembled. Details are given for the layout of the yard, and the facilities and work flow in the plate cutting shop and building dock. The methods for transportation of material within the yard and the procedures for coordinating production resources are described.
