SUPERCONDUCTING ELECTRICAL MACHINES FOR SHIP PROPULSION

The components of an 18,000-shp-per-shaft transmission system employing superconducting electrical machines are described, and the principal considerations involved in the design of these components discussed. On the basis of the characteristics of the system design, it is apparent that superconducting machines offer a means of achieving the flexibility of electric systems at a greatly reduced weight and size.
